SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri State's Nick Dryden scored the game's lone goal in the 97th minute following a post-corner kick scramble, handing Eastern Illinois men's soccer its first overtime loss in over a year Saturday evening at the Plaster Sports Complex.
EIU head coach Adam Howarth said it was a frustrating loss because
Jim Adee and
Ryan Child both had excellent scoring chances early in overtime, only to see an MSU defender clear the ball off the goal line.
With 3:32 remaining in the first overtime period, Dryden snuck a shot inside the far post after Jordan Barbero put MSU's sixth corner kick into play.
“It was a tough one because I felt we should have won it in overtime,” Howarth said. “The guys battled extremely well. We had some changes in the back [row], and we did well defensively. So we were better but just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. And lately, it's been one or the other in which we haven't performed. To lose after our great chances was frustrating. We've just been losing some heartbreakers recently.”
The Panthers (5-9-3, 0-4 MVC) enjoyed a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Missouri State (6-8-4) finished Missouri Valley Conference play with a 3-1-1 record and 10 standings points.
Mark Hansen was back in net for EIU and finished with three saves.
Eastern's last overtime loss came on Oct. 13, 2007 at Creighton. Dating back to 2004, each of EIU's last four overtime losses have been against Missouri Valley Conference opponents.
The Panthers close out the regular season Saturday, Nov. 7 against third-ranked Creighton. The Bluejays can clinch the conference title with a victory. Eastern will most likely be the No. 6 seed in the MVC Tournament regardless of the result of next Saturday's game.
It will be senior recognition day at Lakeside Field with
Eddie Barnes,
Patrick Mabeya,
James Scheffers, Gartner, Hansen, Lewis and Peters honored for their contributions to Panther soccer prior to the match.
