It's the first career league honor for the East Alton senior

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. -- Following a runner-up finish at this past weekend's Butler Invitational, Eastern Illinois golfer Jaymie Voorhees earned her first career Ohio Valley Conference 'Player of the Week' honor, as announced by the league office today (Oct. 7).

The senior led the Panther women to a first place finish at the 14-team invite held at the Eagle Creek Golf Course just outside Indianapolis. Voorhees carded rounds of 75-72 to finish the 36-hole event at 147 (+3). That placed her second overall and just six strokes behind the individual medalist and two strokes ahead of the third place finisher in the 87-player field. Her final round 72 marks her lowest round of the fall season.

“Jaymie has stepped up to the plate this year and is having a steller season thus far,” said EIU head coach Mike Moncel. “But that's what I've been expecting from her, as she's always had the potential of playing at a level to win tournaments. Jaymie has been close several times in her career, but would tend to have some big numbers that would knock her out of contention. However, this week she was able to push through, including earning a round of 72 in a rain storm."

Thus far this autumn, Voorhees has earned three Top 10 finishes in each of the fall events the Panthers have played this year.

"It looks like Jaymie's is finally getting the job done, which is great considering all the hard work she has put in," Moncel said.  "It's good to see all her work finally paying off.”

The EIU women have one final event scheduled on their fall slate, with the three-day Austin Peay Invitational set for Oct. 18-20, where the Panthers will face several fellow OVC foes. Eastern will look to improve on the squad's 14th place finish at the annual event in 2008.
