AKRON, Ohio – The Eastern Illinois women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 contest at Akron on Saturday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field. EIU falls to 1-6-2 with the loss.
The Zips (3-3) got on the scoreboard first in the 28th minute when Kelly Deniro netted her first goal of the season with a strike from the top left corner of the box, knocking the ball into the upper corner of the goal. Akron made the score 2-0 in the 53rd minute when Rachel Phillip scored off a shot from 14-yards out that hit the bottom of the far post and rolled into the back of the net.
Akron took nine more shots (13-4) than EIU in the match and took four more corner kicks (8-4). The Panthers committed six fouls to Akron's 10.
Jessica Blake and
Kristin Germann paced the Panther attack as both players had a shot on goal. Jordan Clark led the Zips with four shots.
Jessica Taldone took the loss for EIU in goal, allowing two goals and making five saves in 63 minutes of action.
Brittany O'Dell made one save in the final 27 minutes of the match in goal.
Jeny Wolbert made two saves and posted her second shutout of the season between the pipes for Akron.
The Panthers return to action on Sept. 23-25 when they open Ohio Valley Conference play host to Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State at Lakeside Field. EIU faces Tennessee Tech on Sept. 23 and Jacksonville State on Sept. 25.
