Three Eastern Illinois Panthers received weekly honors from media covering FCS football following EIU's 33-26 win over Illinois State in the 100th playing of the Mid-America Classic.
Nick Martinez,
Lorence Ricks and
Sam Hendricks were all recognized for their efforts.
Martinez was a dual winner as he was named the OVC Defensive Player of the Week by CollegeSportMadness.com and a defensive back selection by the College Football Performance Awards. Martinez made two interceptions in the final 2:21 of the contest against the Redbirds to help seal the win. He was the first EIU player since 2007 to have two interceptions in one game. He currently ranks first in the OVC and NCAA with two interceptions.
Ricks was recognized by the CFPA as a wide receiver as he racked up 255 all-purpose yards against Illinois State. Ricks is the NCAA leader in all-purpose yards heading into the second week of the season. He is the OVC leader in receptions, receiving yards, kick return average and all-purpose yardage.
Hendricks made an impact in the first half of the game earning tight end CFPA honors. He hauled in four passes including a 20-yard touchdown making his first collegiate appearance.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday with a 2:30 pm kick off at Northwestern. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
