TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State scored in five different innings, using a balanced offense to shutout the Panther baseball team 10-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Warn Field. EIU drops to 4-6 on the year.
“As good as we felt last week after beating a ranked team and going 3-1, the game humbled us pretty quickly today,” said Eastern Illinois head coach
Jim Schmitz. “We had sloppy defense this afternoon and we lost our identity. Strong defense and pitching is how we win games.”
The Panthers looked like they would get on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning with runners on second and third with two outs, but a lineout to third base by
Tyler Schweigert ended the early threat by EIU.
Indiana State combined to score five runs in the second and third inning to take a 5-0 advantage over the Panthers. With one out in the top of the fourth,
George Kalousek gave EIU life with a triple to center field before a
Trent Whitcomb strikeout and a
Brant Valach ground out ended the inning.
The Sycamores added five more runs over the next five innings to take a 10-0 lead. Kyle Burnam paced the Indiana State offense, going 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBI and two runs. Jeremy Lucas added three runs for the Sycamores while Tyler Wampler chipped in three RBI.
Indiana State posted 10 more hits (17-7) than the Panthers while EIU committed one more error (3-2). The Panthers left three fewer (11-8) runners on base than the Sycamores.
Ryan Dineen led the Panthers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double.
Jacob Reese also added two hits in the losing effort.
Andrew Grahn (0-2) took the loss for EIU, surrendering seven hits and five runs (three earned) in 2.1 innings of work. Kyle Rupe (2-0) picked up the win for Indiana State as the Indianapolis, Ind., native threw a career-high 10 strikeouts in seven innings of action.
The Panthers return to action at Big East member South Florida on March 9-11 in a weekend series. Game one is set for 7 p.m. in Tampa, Fla.
