CHARLESTON, Ill. – Seniors
Mariah King and
Ta'Kenya Nixon combined to score 42 points on Saturday afternoon, leading the Panther women's basketball team to an 82-62 win over Southeast Missouri. EIU improves to 12-8 on the year and 6-2 in Ohio Valley Conference action.
After trailing by five (39-35) at the half, the Redhawks (8-12, 2-5 OVC) opened the second stanza with an 8-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 43-39. EIU responded by going 7-for-11 from the floor and 7-for-8 from the foul line to engineer a 22-8 run, taking its first double-digit advantage, 61-51, with 11:29 left in the contest.
Southeast Missouri got within eight (61-53) on the ensuing possession, but the Panthers used another big run (19-3) to take their largest lead of the game, 80-56, with 3:21 left on the clock.
Nixon paced the Panther offense with a game-high 23 points on 9-for-16 shooting. The Michigan City, Ind., native also dished out a game-high eight assists and added five rebounds and three steals. King added 19 points while classmate
Kelsey Wyss chipped in 12 points to round out the double-figure scoring.
EIU posted 20 more rebounds than SEMO (51-31), led by King's game-high eight rebounds.
Sydney Mitchell and
Sabina Oroszova both added seven rebounds in the victory. The Panthers also forced 15 SEMO turnovers, converting the miscues into 20 points.
EIU hit 42.1 percent of its shot attempts, going 32-for-76 from the floor. The Panthers also went 10-for-11 from the charity stripe.
Four Redhawks scored in double figures, led by Bailie Roberts' 14 points. Brittany Harriel added 13 points while Jordan Hunter and Patricia Mack both chipped in 10 points. Mack led the team on the glass with eight rebounds.
The Panthers return to action on Monday, Jan. 28 against UT Martin at 7 p.m. inside Lantz Arena. A special 3-2-1 promotion is available on Monday with $3 tickets, $2 hot dogs and $1 drinks.
