MOREHEAD, Ky. – Katlyn Payne scored a career-high 17 points to lead a Panther women's basketball team that drained a season-high 13 three pointers on Saturday afternoon, defeating Morehead State 78-58 at Johnson Arena. EIU improves to 8-6 on the year and 2-0 in Ohio Valley Conference play.
Tied at 13 with 12:33 left in the first half, the Panthers used an 8-3 run to take a 21-16 lead they would never relinquish. EIU closed the stanza on an 8-0 run to take a 38-26 advantage into the locker room. The Panthers went 8-for-10 from behind the arc in the first half.
EIU kept its foot on the pedal in the second half, opening the stanza on a 13-2 run to take a 51-28 advantage. The Panthers led by as much as 26 (57-31) with 13:32 left in the game. Morehead State got within 16 (65-49), but could not overcome a hot shooting Panther squad that finished the day connecting on 50 percent of the shot attempts (25-for-50).
EIU went 13-for-24 from behind the arc, one made three pointer shy of tying the single-game school record. Payne led the charge as the redshirt-sophomore went 5-for-8.
Kelsey Wyss also went 3-for-4 from three-point range.
The Panthers outrebounded the Eagles by 17 (40-23) led by
Sabina Oroszova's seven rebounds. EIU also had 10 steals in the game and forced 15 Eagle turnovers, converting the miscues into 23 points.
Mariah King was one of two other EIU players in double figures with 15 points.
Ta'Kenya Nixon also added 11 points and a game-high seven assists. Wyss chipped in a career-high six assists in the victory.
Terrice Robinson paced the Morehead State offense with 20 points, going 7-for-13 from the field. Almesha Jones was the only other player in double figures with 15 points as the sophomore guard hit a team-high five three pointers. Mackenzie Arledge led the team on the glass with eight rebounds.
The Panthers conclude their seven-game road trip at Eastern Kentucky on Monday night at 6 p.m. CST.
