MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State scored five runs in the first inning and three in the second inning as the Eagles pulled away from visiting Eastern Illinois, 15-2, in the Ohio Valley Conference series opener on Friday afternoon.
EIU dropped to 10-30 overall, 6-16 in the OVC. MSU improved to 29-17, 14-8 in the OVC. The series will resume on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. (Central).
Kane Sweeney and Brandon Rawe hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning to open up the offense for the Eagles. Blaine Tanner added a sacrifice fly and Clayton Meyer had an RBI single to drive in the fifth run.
Adam Casson had a two-run home run in the top of the second to account for EIU's offense. The Panthers had only four hits with
Caleb Howell going 2-for-4.
Luke Humphreys (6-2) pitched eight innings for Morehead State to collect the win.
Jake Johansmeier (2-5) was tagged with the loss.
Morehead State tacked on three more runs in the second inning taking advantage of two Panther fielding errors.
The Eagles would add runs in the fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings as they had 23 hits against three EIU pitchers.
Rawe was one of four Morehead State players with three hits as he had two home runs. Rawe, Meyer and Nick Newell had three hits. Chris Robinson was 4-for-5 with four runs scored. ?
