Men’s Soccer Drops Exhibition Opener

Jonathon Huerta scores only goal for EIU in 2-1 loss to Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill.
- The Eastern Illinois men's soccer team opened the 2017 season with an exhibition match at Northwestern on Saturday afternoon. The teams played three 30-minute periods during the pre-season match-up. EIU allowed two second period goals and fell to the Wildcat's 2-1.

After a strong defensive first period by each team, Sean Lynch scored both of Northwestern's goals in the second period. One came at the 38 minute mark on a rebound from Ty Seager's header attempt. Lynch's second goal came just before the close of the period. Seager tallied two assists for the Wildcat's.

EIU's only goal came off of a penalty kick from Jonathan Huerta in the third period. Huerta led the Panther's with three shots, while Yann Nsoga and Luke Kurili each had one. EIU goalkeeper Mike Novotny had six saves for the Panther's in Saturday's match.

The Panther's will return home Tuesday Aug. 15 to take on the Saint Xavier Cougars at 2 p.m. for their final exhibition game. The regular season will open on the road Aug. 25 in Green Bay.
