CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois men's soccer team closed exhibition play with a 2-0 win over St. Xavier. The teams played three 30-minute periods during Tuesday's match-up. EIU found the net twice in the second period.
The Panthers were active on the offensive end with 16 total shots with eight of them on goal. Sophomore
Alessandro Corti was the first to find the net for EIU. Corti scored on a header from a header into the box at the 48 minute mark.
Erik Isaksson and
Christian Sosnowski tallied the assist on the play.
Jonathan Huerta scored EIU's second goal on an unassisted direct kick into the back of the net at the 53 minute mark. Huerta finished with three shots, two of them on goal.
Goalkeepers
Jonathan Burke and
Mike Novotny split time in the net for today's match. A strong defensive game from EIU limited St. Xavier's offensive play. The Cougars were held to one shot from Elias Leyva late in the third period.
The Panthers will open regular season play on the road in Green Bay on Aug. 25. They will then head to Milwaukee on Aug. 27 before returning for their home opener on Sept. 1 against Western Michigan.
