Charleston, Ill.- Tennessee Tech was able to take control of the first game of the series between the OVC opponents. The Panthers held the first place Golden Eagles scoreless through four innings of play. Tennessee Tech would score in three straight inning helping secure the victory defeating Eastern Illinois 9-3.
With the loss Eastern Illinois drops to 9-15 (1-6 OVC), while Tennessee Tech advanced to 19-5 (9-1 OVC).
Tyler Jones got the start on the hill today making his fourth start of the season. Jones kept the Golden Eagle offense silent throwing four shutout innings. Tennessee Tech was able to get to Jones late as his pitch-count increased scoring two runs in the fifth, and one in the sixth to end Jones' day. Jones tossed 6.0 innings, with six hits, four strikeouts, three runs, and two walks. With the loss Jones dropped to 2-2 on the season.
The Golden Eagles would break the scoring open in the fifth inning when Alex Junior hit into a fielders choice to score Nick Osborne. Kevin Strohschein's would single later in the inning driving in Alex Junior for the Golden Eagles second run of the game.
Travis Moths had the Panthers offense quite until the sixth inning when Eastern Illinois was able to rally for two runs to cut the lead to 3-2.
Jimmy Huber got the Panthers on the board with a two-out single down the right field line, scoring
Josh Turnock.
Jimmy Govern would follow up hitting a single two left center to score
Dougie Parks who reached on a walk earlier in the inning.
Ethan Roberts came into the game to relieve Moths during the sixth inning. Roberts tossed 3.1 innings in relief, striking out seven batters, allowing 2 hits, a run, and a walk.
Tennessee Tech would break the game open in the top of the seventh with two home runs in the inning. Trevor Putzig belted a two-run homer to left and David Garza would drive a three run homer to left center later in
the inning.
The Panthers would add fight back adding another run in the eighth inning on a Govern sacrifice fly, but the Golden Eagles offense was able to secure the victory defeating Eastern Illinois 9-3.
Huber finished 2-for-4 on the afternoon with an RBI. Govern went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and a walk.
