CLEARWATER, Fla. - Eastern Illinois softball split today's double header in their spring break trip to Florida.
Kendyl McKeough hit a grand slam leading the Panthers to a 4-0 win over Quinnipiac in game one of today's action, while the Bobcats stole a 1-0 win in extra innings to win the second game.
The Panthers are now 7-17 overall. They will play another pair of games on Thursday March 14 vs. UT Chattanooga and North Dakota State. EIU lost to both those teams earlier this season as they seek to split the season match-up.
Game 1
The Panthers combined for 11 hits in the first game of the double-header.
Mia Davis,
Haley Mitchell, and
Taylor Jones each had two, while five other players each added one.
The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning. Davis doubled to left field to get on the bases first for EIU.
Breya Cooper walked at the next at bat, and
Haley Mitchell singled to left field to fill the bases. McKeough homered to clear the bases and put the Panthers up 4-0 leading to their shutout win.
Jade Montgomery improves to 2-9 on the mound and retired five batters.
Game 2
Quinnipiac stole a 1-0 win in extra innings over EIU to force a split of today's double header.
Lo Yarnall doubled to right center in the top of the eighth inning to tally the game winning RBI. Rachel Marchuk scored for Bobcats after reaching first on a fielding error by the Panthers.
Davis finished 2-of-4 at the plate, while
McKenna Coffman finished 2-of-3. Coffman also made the start on the mound falling to 1-5 with four strikeouts.
