The Eastern Illinois baseball team was finally able to play their first game against SEMO in their conference series on Sunday due to rain earlier in the week. SEMO was able to hold off the Panthers with a 10th inning solo homerun to take the first game 10-9.
With the loss EIU drops to 12-13 (5-5 OVC), while SEMO improves to 14-12 (4-6 OVC).
The game started as a pitcher's duel with both pitchers throwing scoreless innings until the bottom of the fourth inning.
Christian Pena was able to get the Panthers on the board first in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field.
SEMO was able to grab the lead from EIU in the top of the fifth inning when Brett Gonzalez hit a two-run single to right field. SEMO would extend their lead in the top of the sixth inning on an Alex Nielsen two-run single up the middle.
The Panthers would cut the Red Hawks lead to one run in the bottom of the sixth when
Keith Kerrigan would hit a one run single up the middle and
Jimmy Govern would single too short to drive in the third run of the game for the Panthers.
SEMO would rally in the seventh inning with a five-run inning to give themselves a commanding 9-3 lead.
EIU would rally, scoring in four straight innings to tie the game up.
Hunter Morris would secure the comeback for the Panthers with a two out game-tying three-run homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning. Tyler Wilber would spoil the Panther comeback with a solo homerun in the top of the 10th inning to give SEMO the victory.
Morris finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, three runs, a homerun, and a walk. Pena finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs, two walks, and a homerun.
Alex Spahman suffered his first loss of the season tossing 3.0 innings with four strikeouts and one run.
