CHARLESTON, Ill. - Eastern Illinois softball hosted SIUE Tuesday night for their annual Athletic Department Appreciation night. The Panthers honored EIU athletic staff members prior to the game on field. The Cougars ran away with two OVC wins today with a 10-3 win in game one and a 13-0 win in five innings for game two.
Haley Mitchell batted .600 on the day with three hits including one double.
EIU hits the road for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend. On Saturday, the Panthers will play at Morehead State at 12 pm. They will then play Eastern Kentucky on Sunday starting at 12 pm.
Game 1
Mitchell tallied two of her hits on the day in game one with the Cougars as the Panthers fell 3-10.
Megan Burton led off with a game-opening double down the left field line. Burton took off to second on an infield hit by Davis and went on to score EIU's first run after a throwing error by the Cougars. Davis advanced to second on a single from Mitchell that went through the right side into the out field. Both would eventually advance on a a wild pitch from Corinna Rivas who tallied her first of three wild pitches in the inning. Davis scored the second run on a sac fly from
Kendyl McKeough and Mitchell scored the final run for EIU on a single up the middle from
Tayler Wullenweber.
SIUE narrowed EIU's lead to one after scoring two in the second inning. They found their offensive stride scoring another six runs in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth leading them to a 10-3 win.
Mitchell, Burton, and Wullenweber combined for the Panthers four hits in the game. The Cougars had three players with two hits each.
Jade Montgomery started and collected the loss falling to 4-17 overall.
McKenna Coffman came in for Montgomery in the third inning and was replaced by
Sydney Cammon who pitched the final 4.1 innings. Montgomery and Cammon combined for five strikeouts. Rivas improves to 6-7 for the Cougars.
Game 2
The Cougars kept their offensive momentum going into game two earning a 13-0 win in five innings. Mitchell,
Morgan LaMore, and
Mady Poulter recorded EIU's only hits of the game.
SIUE scored two in the first and another two in the third, but it was a big fifth inning that would power them to the win. Sammi Ofoia was the star for SIUE in the fifth starting out with a solo homer way into left field. The Cougars batted around the order leading to another power hit from Ofoia who nailed a double down the left field line to drive in another three runs for the Cougars. She finished 3-for-3 at the plate with all four RBI in the fifth.
Hannah Cravens pitched 4.1 innings and falls to 0-4 on the year.
Jenna Robbins,
McKenna Coffman, and
Sydney Cammon finished the final inning on the mound for EIU, while Bianca Vozenilek picked up her first win for SIUE.
