BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Illinois junior defensive back
Russell Dandy picked up a pair of weekly Ohio Valley Conference honors on Sunday as the league announced its weekly awards.
Â
Dandy was named both the OVC Defensive Player and Newcomer of the Week following his performance in the Panthers non-conference game on Saturday at Murray State.
Â
Dandy was responsible for all three turnovers gained by the Eastern Illinois defense as he had two interceptions including one in the endzone that turned away a Murray State touchdown.
Â
He finished with seven tackles (all solo) with a tackle for loss.  On his tackle for loss he forced a fumble that he would recover on the play.
Â
It marked the second straight week that EIU has had a player win OVC Defensive Player of the Week honors after
Jordan Miles won last week for his efforts at Tennessee Tech.
Â
Dandy has 21 tackles for the season and his two interceptons rank him 41st in the FCS and third in the OVC.
Â
EIU heads into a bye week before back-to-back home games on Oct. 16 and Oct. 23 against UT Martin and Tennessee State. EIU currently sits in first place in the OVC standings with a 1-0 conference mark.Â
