Eastern Illinois men's golf opened up the 2023 season on Friday with a pair of match play contests at the Carpenter/Chaney Classic in Mims, Fla.
The Panthers lost the morning round to Tennessee Tech by a score of 6-0 before falling 5-0-1 to UT Martin in the Friday afternoon match.
EIU closes out play on Saturday morning against Bellarmine.
In the Friday afternoon match
Pierce Allord played to an 18-hole draw with Johnathan Xoinis. The match was tied after 16 holes with Allord taking a one-hole advantage after winning the 17th. Xoinis would win the 18th to square the match.
Keegan Gowin would fall to Bryson Morrell by one through 18 holes. The match was tied through 12 holes with Morrell going up by one by winning the 14th hole. Gowin would birdie the next hole to even the match which remained square until the final hole when Morrell posted the win.
Grant Mascal was competitive in his match against Jacob Uehlein. The two were even through the opening ten holes before Uehlein won six of the remaining holes to clinch the match.
In the morning match Allord and Gowin had the two closest matches for the Panthers with each losing 2&1. Haden Maxwell would win holes 16 and 17 to beat Gowin after the match between the two was tied after 15 holes. Allord lost to Jackson Skeen with Skeen winning holes 15 and 17 to clinch after hole No. 16 was halved.
