Eastern Illinois football opens the 2024 season on August 29 at Illinois, the first of two games this season against Big Ten Conference schools.

The Panthers enter the 2024 season with some solid production returning but also some holes that need to be filled in a versatile wide receiver group.

"I'm filled with both excitement and gratitude about this group. We've got a mix of experienced vets and talented newcomers who are eager to add value. Although losing some key playmakers in the room last year this new blend of talent and experience is exactly what we need to continue to take the next step," said wide receivers coach Tino Smith II.

The experienced veterans begins with the trio of returners in Eli Mirza, DeAirous Smith and Cooper Willman.  Mirza was listed as a preseason wide receiver to watch in the Big South/OVC after earning first team All-Big South/OVC honors last season.  Mirza led the team with 61 catches for 721 yards.  Smith was a big play receiver for the Panthers ranking 24th in the FCS in yards per reception while Willman has been steady in his EIU career but missed part of last season due to injury.

Smith commented on Mirza as one of the leaders in the group.

"Eli is a special talent and has an incredible approach to the game. His ability to adapt and overcome is remarkable," said Smith.  "I'm honored to be his Coach and I'm excited to see all the work he's put in this off season come to light."

The Panthers do have some production holes to fill from last year and look to do that with a combination of players.  Looking to emerge into the rotation are transfers Cody Davidson (JUCO), CJ Nelson (Houston), Surahz Buncom (Kansas) and Landers Green (Union) along with returning receivers Aaron Rice (R-Fr), Quenton Rogers (R-Fr) and Jamal Jeffers (R-Sr).  Terrance Gipson is an athletic player that is new to the group after coming to EIU as a quarterback and playing in the defensive secondary during spring practice.

"We are one, each receiver in the room brings their own special value. From their leadership to unique skill sets, versatility, and ability," added Smith.  "As a group they've accepted the challenge to be on a daily quest to be thy best self and teammate, on and off the field. I'm honored to lead such a great group of young men and looking forward to seeing them bring their skills to the playing field and making an impact. Go Panthers."

The remainder of the wide receiver room consists of freshmen in twin brothers David Ajose and Daniel Ajose, Collin Willard, Max Loveall, Jeremy Reeves and Johnovan Wysinger.
