Track and Field Wraps Up Gary Wieneke Memorial

14 Panther athletes find the podium

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Eastern Illinois Track and Field team showed out on Friday at the University of Illinois Gary Wieneke Memorial with 14 Panther athletes finishing in one of the top three spots in their respective events.

Due to inclement weather, the Gary Wieneke Memorial was originally scheduled for both Friday and Saturday, but was reworked and condensed into a one-day event set for Friday.

The field athletes dominated the day for Eastern Illinois, as 10 of the 14 podium finishes stemmed from the field events and jumps. Emily Sykes came out of the gates hot with a third-place finish in the women's javelin throw after reaching a distance of 33.45m. Shawn Lacy and Sach Wolf dominated the men's division, as Lacy finished first with a personal-best throw of 55.86m and Wolf earned second with a toss of 44.84m.

Gracie Cox and Sam Bradbury headlined the discus event for the Panthers. Cox's mark of 47.41m gave her a second-place finish, while Bradbury's distance of 49.11m slid him into the third spot on the podium.

The EIU jumpers made their names heard on Friday, recording five top-three finishes across three different jumping events. Kenyetietta Quinn and Elijah Skutt found success in the high jump, as Quinn placed third (1.70m) and Skutt placed second (2.04m).

Israel Jackson, Taryn Tarquinn, and Abraham Johnson continued Eastern Illinois's strong efforts in the sand pit. Jackson was the only Panther to place in the long jump, finishing third with a season-best mark of 6.61m.Meanwhile, Tarquin and Johnson each finished second in the triple jump. Tarquin jumped a personal best 12.22m as Johnson reached a distance of 15.57m.

Three Panther sprinters posted a strong finish in the 100m dash, occupying the third, fourth, and fifth place spots in the men's division. Shawn Lacy earned third with a time of 10.81, Israel Jackson finished fourth in 10.98, and Jahleel Perrin crossed the finish line in 11.01 to place fifth.

An additional three EIU sprinters found success on the track, one in the men's 400m and two in the women's 400m. Daniel Lacy placed second in the men's division with a personal record of 46.12 while Makenna McBride (57.08) and Devin Johnston (57.26) finished second and third in the women's division with season-best numbers in the event.

Up Next
Eastern Illinois will return to competition next weekend for their final regular-season meet of 2025. The Panthers will travel east to Terre Haute, Ind., for the third time this outdoor season to take part in the Sycamore Open at the Gibson Track & Field Complex on Friday, May 9.

EIU will then shift its focus to the OVC Outdoor Championships, set for May 15–17 at Abe Stuber Track Complex on the campus of Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
