Eastern Illinois held Little Rock to two points in the second quarter making a charge to climb back into the game at halftime. The Trojans scored 42 points in the second half to hold off EIU 73-53 on Saturday afternoon at Groniger Arena.
Little Rock shot a blistering 61.1 percent in the opening ten minutes including 6-of-8 from 3-point range to jump out to a 29-9 lead after the first quarter.
EIU turned up the defense in the second quarter limiting the Trojans to two points in the quarter to trial 31-23 at the half.
Adriana Arroyo,
Olivia Thostenson and
Ella Lune all scored off the bench during the Panthers second quarter run as EIU finished the game with a 25-13 advantage in bench production.
Nyah Hardy led EIU with nine points off the bench. Arroyo scored eight while pulling down a team-high seven rebounds.
Brenna Burk scored just 15 seconds into the third quarter to push the Little Rock lead back to double figures and EIU could never trim the lead back down from there.
Burk led four Little Rock players in double figures with 19 points as the Trojans improved to 13-13 overall, 9-7 in the OVC. Jordan Holman (15 pts, 12 reb) and Destinee Salgado (11 pts, 10 reb) each had double-doubles.
EIU dropped to 4-23 overall, 3-13 in the OVC.
Sydney-James Desroches had eight points as the top scoring EIU starter in the game.
