Eastern Illinois trailed by ten points with 1:10 remaining with a furious Panthers rally coming up just short at the wire in a 73-70 Thursday loss to Morehead State at Groniger Arena.
Â
The Eagles (16-12, 12-5 OVC) went up 70-60 with 1:10 to play on a Davion Cunningham jumper as he scored 19 points off the bench, one of two MSU players in double figures. George Marshall led all players with 23.
Â
EIU cut it down to one possession with a 7-0 run including four points by
Zion Fruster and a 3-pointer by
Markus Blackwell to make it a 70-67 Eagles lead with 27 seconds remaining.
Â
Following one made free throw on the next trip down the floor, Blackwell sank his second 3-pointer with 8 seconds left to bring EIU within one point.
Â
Morehead State again made one of two free throws on the next possession but a 3-pointer by EIU for the win fell short. Morehead State rebounded the ball and made one of two at the line to ice the game with 1 second remaining as a desperation heave by EIU was knocked down at mid-court.
Â
The Eagles led 29-28 at the half and ended the game shooting 53.1 percent.
Â
The Panthers had four players finish in double figures led by Fuster with 18 points and six steals.Â
Meechie White had 13 points, six assists and two steals as he moved into the EIU single season top ten for steals.
Â
Kooper Jacobi (12 pts) and
Nazareth Fisher (11 pts) rounded out the double figure EIU players as the Panthers fell to 11-17 overall, 7-10 in the OVC.
