Panthers Track Travels To Illinois Deca-Jam

Eastern Illinois track and field continues its outdoor season this weekend as the Panthers head just up the road for the Illinois Deca-Jam.
 
The three-day event will consist of the decathlon and heptathlon on Thursday and Friday (12:30 pm start both days) with the full meet set for Saturday at Demirjian Park.  Saturday's field events begin at 11 am with the women's discus and men's shot put.  Running events are set for a 12 pm start with the steeplechase.
 
Last weekend EIU posted two first place finishes at the Indiana State Pacesetter with Ashlyn Denney winning the 800 meter run for the women and Michael Atkins the winner in the men's 5,000 meter race.  As a team the Panthers posted a total of eight top three event finishes.
 
Entering the third week of the Panthers outdoor season, EIU currently has two athletes ranked in the Top 50 in their events in the NCAA West Region.  Machi Nelson is 25th in the region in the long jump with a mark of 24'7" set at the EIU Big Blue Meet.  Abby Venhaus is 41st in the NCAA West Region in the long jump clearing 19'9.50" at the EIU Big Blue.
 
A total of five EIU athletes rank first in the OVC in their event heading into the weekend.
