CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- The Eastern Illinois women's and men's golf squads captured 11th and 12th place, respectively, at the recent 17 team F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate hosted by OVC foe Austin Peay the past couple of days.
Shooting a combined 663 (+87), the Panther women were led by freshman Emily Calhoun's 16-over-par 160 in two rounds of place, which ended up tying her for 18th place out of the 90 total competitors.
On the men's side, junior
Francisco Cherizola also ended up tying for 18th place, via a 218 three-round score to finish two-over-par.
The Austin Peay Intercollegiate, played at the par 72 Links at Novadell ended up being a 6841 (men) and 5960 yard course, and also an early indicator of possible league championship finishes, as seven Ohio Valley Conference programs competed in the event.
Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky took home men's and women's team trophies, while TTU's Megan Bradford and Oakland's Jakob Ziegler capturing the individual titles, respectively.
Other EIU golfers on the women's side included seniors
Jaymie Voorhees and
Katie Imburgia tying for 23rd (163) and 36th (167), respectively.
Veronica Bernier (T-63rd) and
Jenna Fox (T-65th) rounded out the EIU contingent.
For the men, other Panther finishers included senior
Matt Bird tied at 25th (219), finishing just one stroke behind Cherizola. Gino Parodi also ended up in the Top 50 with a 39th place tie (221), followed by
David Lawrence (T-69th) and
Sean Dozier (T-71st).
Quick look at team standings shows that the EIU women finished behind OVC rivals Morehead State (1st), Tennessee Tech (4th), Murray State (6th), Eastern Kentucky (7th), and Austin Peay (T-9th). But the Panthers did finish ahead of future OVC member SIU-Edwardsville (15th) and Tennessee State (17th).
For the men, the Panthers ended up trailing league foes Eastern Kentucky (1st), Jacksonville State (5th), Austin Peay (6th), Murray State (7th), future league foe SIU-Edwardsville (9th), and Tennessee Tech (T-10th). Yet Eastern did outlast Morehead State (13th), Tennessee State (15th), and UT Martin (16th).
This meet marks the end of the fall portion of the Panther golfing scheduling for both the men and women, with action set to resume next spring.
