INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Both the Eastern Illinois men's and women's swimming squads finished a full day of action on Sunday, participating in the Butler Invitational at the North Central High School natatorium just outside of Indianapolis.
Originally scheduled as a multi-dual meet between all schools, the event instead was scored as an invitational. The Panther men took second of three squads, while the EIU women ended up in third out of five.
“This was a good meet for us and a great indicator for where we are at with 25 days to go before the Summit League meet,“ said second year head coach Matt Bos. “We had some great individual performances and put together some good relay swims as well, particularly with the guys.”
The Eastern men actually finished one point ahead of team winner Ball State in the scoring if the 74 diving points won by the Cardinals had been taken out of the mix. Unfortunately the Panthers finished in second instead, due to no longer sporting diving squads.
The men were led by sophomore Rich Waszak, who touched the wall first in both the 100 and 200-Back events with times of 54.53 and 1:57.60, respectively. Junior Matt Scaliatine earned a first place finish in his 200-Breast event with a time of 2:11.26.
Other individual winners included three freshmen as Ken Tiltges won the 200-Free (1:45.91), Joe Ciliak the 100-Breast (59.88), and Mike Lacine in the 200-IM (1:59.14).
The foursome of Rich Wasak, Joe Ciliak, Cody Showers, and Joe Wilson teamed up to win the 200-Medley Relay with a combined time of 1:36.90.
For the women, senior Laura Nilsen picked up the lone Panther win in an event, touching first in both the 100 and 200-Back with her respective times of 59.46 and 2:08.76.
“We are reaching the end of the road as far as our hard training,” said Bos. “We will start to rest soon, and based off how our training has been the past few months, I think we are in really good shape.”
Several other Panther swimmers set new personal and season best times in the event as well.
“We still have a couple more meets to sharpen up, but overall we are looking good and hopefully our squads will get stronger with some rest,” Bos said.
Eastern returns to the pool next Saturday, hosting fellow Summit League foe IUPUI at noon.
