Panthers Earn Season-Opening Split at IUPUI

EIU men win, 127-78, but the women fell to Jacguars, 132-70

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Eastern Illinois men's and women's swimming squads opened the 2010-11 season Thursday night by splitting their respective road meets at IUPUI. The Panther men picked up a nice 127-78 win, while the EIU women fell, 132-76.

The men ended up capturing first place in seven events, and were led by sophomore Ken Tiltges, who won both the 200-Free (1:48.05) and 100-Free (48.31). Other individual winners included junior Tyler Hsieh in the 50-Free sprint with a 22.47 finish, sophomore Michael Lacine in the 200-Individual Medley (2:01.58), and senior Matt Scaliatine in the 200-Breast with a time of 2:12.79.

Runner-up honors went to Chacour Koop in the 1000-Free as the sophomore touched in 10:36.29, classmate Mike Lehman followed Hsieh in the 50-Free (22.59), and seniors Nathan Moritz and Cody Showers finished second in the 200-Butterfly (1:59.35) and 100-Free (50.02), respectively. Junior Matt O'Hagan finished just behind Scaliatine in the 200-Breast with a time of 2:14.15.

In relay action, the men touched the wall first in both the 400-Medley and 400-Free events. The team of junior Rich Waszak, sophomore Joe Ciliak, Mortiz, and Hsieh earned a 3:34.87 finish in the medley event, while sophomore John Wilson, Tiltges, Showers, and Hsieh teamed up to win the free relay in 3:17.27.

On the women's side, sophomores Hailey Foss and Kelli Dicanio joined freshman Katelynn Paige and senior Alyssa Lehman to pick-up the 400-Medley Relay win, touching with a time of 4:09.89.

Individually, senior Megan Eshleman touched first in the 1000-Free (10:46.37) and came in second in 500-Free (5:16.22), while freshman Mary Lacine picked up her first win as a Panther in her 200-IM race with a time of 2:18.76.

Also finishing second for the EIU women was newcomer Katelynn Paige in the 200-Butterfly (2:19.45), as did Lehman in her 200-Backstroke event (2:16.60).

The Panthers will now prepare for the team's home opener on Sunday afternoon, hosting regional rival Ball State at 1 pm at EIU's Ray Padovan Pool.
