TUNICA, Miss. -- The Eastern Illinois men's and women's swimming squads ended Tunica Invitational action as the two teams combined for a third place finish.
Individually, the Panther men captured second place of four teams competing, while the Eastern women ended up in fourth place at the two-day invite.
On Friday,
Nathan Moritz led the Panthers with a first place honor in his 200-Fly, touching with a time of 1:57.75.
Also finishing first were the foursome of
Rich Waszak, Matt O'Hagan,
Cody Showers, and
Ken Tiltges as they combined to win the 400-Medley Relay with a time of 3:32.52.
Mike Lacine and Tiltges touched second and third in the 200-IM with times of 1:58.67 and 2:00.16, respectively, while Tiltges also finished third in the 100-Free (48.48).
Second place went to O'Hagan in the 100-Breast (59.49), while
Kelli Dicanio also came just short in the same event with a time of 1:08.74.
Alyssa Lehman ended up in second as well, in her 200-Back race at 2:11.38.
Tiltges, Showers,
Mike Lehman, and
Colin McGill came up a second shy of first in the 200-Free Relay. Meanwhile, the 800-Free Relay squad of
Joe Ciliak, Waszak, Lehman, and
Adam Jones also earned a second place honor with their 7:12.62 finish.
Panther first place finishers on Saturday included Waszak touching first in the 100-Back via a time of 53.47. Second place finishers included Nathan Mortiz in the 100-Fly via a time of 53.27, as did
Alyssa Lehman in the 100-Back (1:01.73).
Meanwhile, Ciliak and Dicanio each captured third place honors in their 200-Breast races with times of 2:14.29 and 2:31.61, respectively.
In Saturday relay events, Waszak, O'Hagan, Showers, Tiltges teamed up to capture the 200-Medley in 1:35.81. Then Tiltges, Showers, Waszak and Ciliak each combined to finish a close second in the 400-Free Relay, coming just less than a second from first.
For the women, the team of Lehman,
Morgan Roberts, Dicanio, and
Mary Lacine finished third in their own 400-Free Relay (3:52.57).
The EIU men's 823 point total finished behind Missouri State (1,063), while Delta State (668) and Rhodes College (332) rounded out the standings.
On the women's side, Eastern had 468 total scores to finish just behind Arkansas-Little Rock in third, while MSU (1,121.50) and Delta State (664.50) ended up in first and second, respectively. The EIU women did out-pace Rhodes College (325) in fifth.
Quick look at the combined team scores, showed that the MSU Bears naturally took home the trophy via 2,184.50 total points. EIU ended up in third with 1,291 total points.
The Panthers return home to Charleston to prepare for a road dual meet at arch-rival Western Illinois on Sat., Jan. 15, with first splash set for 1 pm in Macomb.
