CHICAGO, Ill. -- The sophomore duo of Ryan Hughes and Daniel Hughes led all Eastern Illinois men's golfers with respective 10th and 11th place finishes at the Chicago State Fall Classic, as the twin brothers carded scores of 149 and 150 at the two-day event.
Team-wise, the Panthers finished in fourth place (604/+27), out of seven squads competing. Â Eastern actually tied for second overall following first day action, but added nine strokes to their tally on Tuesday and junior Oscar Borda's withdraw would also affect the team's overall mark.
Ryan Hughes finished with a five-over-par total (73-76) at the Par 72, 6,883-yard Harborside International Golf Center, which is located just outside Chicago, while his brother Daniel was tabbed with one additional sroke.
Classmate Marcus Dahlin followed in a tie for 13th (151/+7), while junior Austin Sproles rounded out the EIU scorers with an 18th place tie (155/+11). Â Newcomer Nick Yuhas also saw action as an independent golfer for EIU, tying for 29th place overall, while Borda secured just a three-over-par score in the opening round of play before withdrawing.
Valparaiso, who sported two full teams, earned the team title with an eight-over 584 stroke tally, while Zach Cutler led all individual golfers with an even par 144 score. Â Wisconsin-Green Bay finished second, followed by the second Valpo squad just four strokes ahead of EIU in third place. Â The Panthers out-paced Parkland CC, Saint Xavier (Ill.), and the host Cougars of Chicago State.
Eastern will continue fall action on Oct. 3-5, as the Panthers are set to compete at the John Dallio Memorial Invitational, which will be hosted by DePaul and held at the Ruffled Feathers Golf Course in Lemont, Ill.
