CHARLESTON, Ill. - Head women's basketball coach Debbie Black announced the addition of three incoming freshmen for the 2017-18 season during the NCAA fall signing period. The EIU women's basketball team welcomes two Indiana natives in Taylor Steele and Katrina Christian along with Texan Vuyelwa Magalela to the Panther family next season.
Steele is one of Highland High School's team leaders recording over 1,000 points in her first three years on the varsity squad. She finished her junior season averaging 20.6 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game. Steele was named an Indiana Post-Tribune All-Area Selection as a junior.
Christian is currently starting her senior season at Crothersville High School after averaging 16.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game her junior year. An All-Conference basketball and track selection her freshman year, Christian has played on the varsity basketball squad all four years of high school.
Both Steele and Christian were named IBCA Underclass All-State Honorable mentions their junior seasons.
Magelela begins her senior campaign after helping her high school squad to a regional finals berth last season. During her junior year at Plano West High School, Magalela saw action in 32 games averaging two points and 2.9 rebounds per game.
The Panthers replenish all fronts with their incoming freshmen as Christian has played at both the guard and the forward position during her high school career while Magelela played center. Steele played the majority of her career as a shooting guard.
The Panthers continue their 2016-17 season this Thursday as they host Wright State at 6 p.m.
