Eastern Illinois men's tennis wrapped up play at the Illinois State Redbird Fall Invite. In the three day, five-team event, three Eastern Illinois players reached the consolation finals of their flight draws with
Gage Kingsmith picking up a consolation final win.
Kingsmith played in the Flight D singles draw and lost his opening round match to Zach Rasmusson of Illinois State, 6-4, 7-6. Kingsmith would rebound to win his next two matches to finish with a 2-1 record in the draw. Kingsmith defeated Luke Moorhead of Creighton, 7-6, 6-4, in the second round before beating teammate
Logan Charbonneau in three sets for the Flight D consolation bracket win. Kingsmith beat Charbonneau 7-6, 6-7, 7-6.
Charbonneau lost his opening round match in Flight D to Alex Warstler of Marquette, 7-6, 6-3. He would beat Nick Liddy of Cleveland State, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round to advance to face Kingsmith.
In the Flight A draw
Daniel Hernandez advanced to the consolation bracket final. Hernandez lost to Nick Campbell of Creighton in the opening match,6-3, 7-6 (4). He would then knock off Jakov Suler of Cleveland State in the second round, 6-1, 4-6, 15-13 before falling to Stratton Brown of Creighton in the consolation final, 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles action Kingsmith and
Freddie O'Brien teamed up to win two of their three matches. They beat a doubles team from Illinois State, 8-4, in the opening round. The would lose in the second round to a doubles team from Creighton, 8-7, before defeating a doubles team from Marquette, 8-5, in the final round.
