RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Eastern Illinois men's tennis opened the 2018-19 season playing in the eight team River Forest Collegiate Tournament at the River Forest Tennis Club. The three-day event included teams from teams from Detroit Mercy, Marquette, Saint Louis, Northern Illinois, UIC, Valparaiso and Youngstown State. All matches in the tournament were played on clay courts.
Newcomer
Daniel Hernandez had the most successful weekend for the Panthers men's players as the transfer from Longwood University won the No. 6 singles flight title. Hernandez beat Shaddy Khalafallah of Marquette in the opening round 6-3, 7-6 (8). In the semifinals Hernandez defeated Anthony Nguyen of UIC 6-3, 6-1. In the championship match of the flight, Hernandez picked up a 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 win over Yossi Dahan of Youngstown State.
In other Sunday singles action
Mike Jansen finished seventh in the No. 3 singles flight. Jansen beat Julian Robinson of Marquette 7-5, 6-2 on Sunday.
Braden Davis won on Sunday beating Kailash Panchapakesan of UIC 0-6, 6-2, 10-6 to finish in seventh place in the No. 5 singles flight.
In doubles action
Logan Charbonneau and
Luka Knieling finished fourth in the No. 3 doubles draw. The pair lost the third place match 8-5 to UIC.
