Softball Falls to USC Upstate, Beats Colgate

The Panthers put up 13 runs vs. Colgate

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Eastern Illinois softball split day two at the USF Series in Florida this morning. USC Upstate shutout the Panthers 8-0 to open the day, but EIU rebounded with a 13-4 win over Colgate. Five players scored multiple hits vs. Colgate helping the Panthers to their sixth win of the season.

The Panthers improve to 6-16 overall and will play a double-header vs. Quinnipiac on Tuesday starting at 12 pm.

Game 1
Morgan LaMore recorded the Panthers only hit in the game as they fell 8-0 to USC Upstate Sunday Morning. 

USCU recorded nine hits in the game and scored the game winning run in just the second inning. Wright hit a one-run double to send the game winning run across home plate. The Spartans would add another run in the second on a second one-run double just two batters later. USCU scored three more runs in the third, one in the fourth, and one in the fifth to run rule the Panthers in five innings.

Jade Montgomery was EIU's starting pitcher. She falls to 1-10 on the mound. McKenna Coffman faced 13 batters in the final 2.2 innings of the game.

Game 2
The Panthers recorded a season-high 18 hits vs. Colgate in their 13-4 win in the closing game of the day.

Colgate scored the first two runs of the game as Rounsavill hit a two-run double to close the bottom of the first inning, but EIU was quick to tie it 2-2 in the top of the second. Taylor Jones and Hannah Kissel each hit singles to score a base runner each.

The Raiders scored their final two runs of the game in the bottom of the second. Romero doubled to score one run, while the final Colgate run scored on a passed ball.

Haley Mitchell hit a two-run homer in the top of the third to record the game winning RBI as Breya Cooper scored with her. Kissel kept the offensive momentum going in the top of the fourth with a single, Megan Burton would follow with a double, and both would score on a double from Mia Davis. Cooper hit the second two-run homer of the game to score her and Davis as EIU jumped out to an 8-4 lead.

EIU scored another five runs by the end of the seventh highlighted by the team's third homer of the game from Davis in the sixth inning. Jones, Shelby Martell, Tayler Wullenweber, and Kendyl McKeough would all record RBI in the final two innings.

Davis finished 3-of-4 at the plate with two runs and three RBI. Cooper added two runs scored and twi RBI, while Mitchell finished 2-of-4 with two runs scored, and two RBI. Jones was also solid at the plate with three hits and Kissel added two.

Valerie Thompson started on the mound for EIU, but Sydney Cammon would come in to pitch after the first inning earning the win and improving to 1-1 on the mound.
