The Eastern Illinois baseball team competed in the second game of their series against Austin Peay. Due to weather the two teams pushed their game to an earlier 10 am start. The Governors got to the Panthers earlier defeating EIU 29-5.Â
The Panthers honored nine seniors before the game. The seniors honored were
Jimmy Govern,
Jimmy Huber,
Carson Haws,
Tyler Jones,
Spenser Dexter,
Clayton Slifer,
Cole Berry,
Josh Cooper, and
Hunter Morris.
With the loss, EIU drops to 24-26 and 13-16 in the OVC.
The Governors came out aggressive early on in the second game of the series. Austin Peay would score 19 unanswered runs through five innings.
The Panthers were able to get on the board in the bottom of the sixth when
Ryan Knernschield would drive in
Grant Emme with a single to right field.
Austin Peay would add nine more runs through the last few innings of play to defeat EIU 29-1.
Huber would drive a solo homerun to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning to cut the lead down to 27 runs.
Christian Pena would keep the ninth inning rally alive with a one run single through the right side. Govern would bring in the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field. Morris would connect on the first pitch to drive in the Panthers fifth run of the game with a single up the middle.
The two teams will aim to close out their series on Sunday at 1 pm. The Panthers will play host to Butler for their final game at Coaches Stadium on Tuesday May 14th.
