ON-TAP: The EIU Panthers' indoor men and women's track teams return home after Christmas break to compete in the John Craft Invite held at Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 9 a.m. This will be the first John Craft Invite since Jan. 18, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Field events will begin at 9 a.m. with track events following at 11:30 a.m. The John Craft Invite will include the following teams: Central Baptist, Lyon, Vincennes, Williams Baptist, Evansville, and SIUE.

PREVIOUS MEET RESULTS: The Panthers hosted the EIU Early Bird meet on Dec. 10 in which they saw 20 first places finishes between the men and women's teams. Bradley Olysav led the way for the men's field team as he posted first in the shot put with a distance of 15.82m, and a first place finish in the weight throw with a throw of 16.27m. For the men's track team, Riley Baker led the way with a first place finish in the 400 m with a time of 50.23. He also helped the 4 x 400 m relay team place first with a team time of 3:25.95.

The women's indoor field team was led by Taryn Tarquin in the long jump with a distance of 5.19 m. Zakiya Johnson led the way for the women's track team with two wins in the 400 m and the 4 x 400m relay. She was the only participant in the 400 m event to finish with a time under a minute (59.64). She also helped the relay team finish with a team of 4:07.37.

OVC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: EIU earned three Ohio Valley Conference Athletes of the Week from their effort during the EIU Early Bird meet last month. Riley Baker collected his first Men's Track Athlete of the Week after his performances in the 400m and the 4 x 400m relay. Zakiya Johnson earned her first Women's Athlete of the Week award after her performances in the 400m and the 4 x 400m relay. Sean Hopkins, in his first career meet, earned Freshman Athlete of the Week after his first place finish in the long jump. All three look to continue their success in the John Craft Invite.

NEXT UP: The Panthers will return to action next weekend as they travel to Bloomington, Ind. for their first away meet at the Indiana Gladstein Invite hosted by Indiana University. The meet will start on Friday, Jan. 21 and conclude on Saturday, Jan. 22.

HEAD COACH: Keith Roberts was hired as the new Director of Track and Field for the Panthers, and is entering his first season as the head track and field coach.  He becomes just the fourth director of track and field in the program's NCAA Division I history. Roberts arrives at EIU after serving six years as recruiting coordinator and assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh. During his time there, Roberts  helped with Pitt's transition from the Big East to the ACC. With his assistance the men's track and field team rose from 11th in the conference to 4th place.  Roberts has recruited and coached ACC scorers in the women's 60 hurdles, men's 60 hurdles, women's 100m dash, men's 200m dash, women's 400m dash, men's 400m dash, women's 400 hurdles, men's 400 hurdles, men's and women's 4x100 relay and men's and women's 4x400 relay.
