Swim Battles USI In First Meet Of 2024

Panthers rack up nine golds and twelve silvers

CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Eastern Illinois men's and women's swim team took on Southern Indiana on Friday night in what was their first competition of 2024. The men fell by a score 93-168, while the women came up short 109-149. However, despite the losses, multiple Panthers had strong performances on the evening.

The EIU women's 200 medley relay team of Izzy Glasgow, Corinne Staneart, Olivia Viele, and Autumn Grinter opened up the evening with a gold for the Panthers, as they clocked a time of 1:50.78.

Later on, Conner Colston picked up a dominant first place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:43.95, which was over four seconds faster than any of his competitors. He also took gold in the 100 freestyle (47.87).

Meanwhile, Grinter also earned a pair of golds with victories in both the 50 freestyle (54.22) and the 100 freestyle (54.22).

Other first place finishers for the Panthers included Erika Baber in the women's 200 backstroke (2:13.18), Corinne Staneart in the women's 200 backstroke (2:25.07), and Jackson Penny in the men's 200 medley (2:02.30).

Eastern also picked up another relay win with Autumn Grinter, Phoebe Croston, Izzy Glasgow, and Kaylan Ottosen combining their efforts for a time of 1:48.88 in the 200 freestyle relay.

EIU also collected multiple silvers on the night.

Phoebe Croston was runner-up in the women's 200 freestyle with time of 2:03.07, while Corinne Staneart took silver in the 100 breastroke (1:08.19) and 200 individual medley (2:13.86).

Olivia Viele finshed second in the women's 200 butterfly (2:17.67) and Kaylan Ottosen came in at the two spot in the 100 butterfly (1:01.84).

On the men's side, Nolan Wallace finished second in the 100 breastroke with a time of 1:20.24, which was just slim margin of .04 behind first place.

Landon Badstibner took silver in the 200 butterfly (2:05.59), while Dismas Dillon earned a pair of runner up finishes in the 50 free (21.40) and 100 free (47.95).

Sebastian Rosales finished second 100 butterfly with a time of 54.01.

Eli Westbrook, Gabe Berry, Sebastian Rosales, and Dismas Dillon clocked a time of 1:37.37 in the men's 200 medley relay for a second place finish. Eastern also took silver in the 200 freestyle relay.

The Panthers will be back in action Saturday afternoon at Padovan Pool. The men will face Evansville and Wabash, while the women dual with the Aces. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.
