ON-TAP: The Eastern Illinois Track & Field squad are entering their second consecutive weekend of two meets. This time, the Panthers will have athletes heading west to compete in the Azusa Pacific Bryan Clay Invite, held in Azusa, California and athletes heading north to Champaign, to participate in the Illinois Gary Wieneke Memorial. The Azusa Pacific Invite will run Thursday through Saturday while the Illinois Gary Invite will occur on Saturday.
LAST MEET: Last weekend, the Panthers had athletes competing in both the Saint Louis Billiken Invite and the Ole Miss Joe Walker Invite.
In St. Louis,
Rachel Koon won the 3000m steeplechase for EIU with a time of 11:47.14.
Devin Johnston posted a personal best time of 59.36 in the 400m dash, finishing the event in third place. In the 100m,
Shamera Moore was another Panther achieving a personal best, as she ranked fourth with a time of 12.75.
On the men's side,
Michael Atkins ranked third in the 5000k with a time of 15:07.71.
Moving on to Oxford, in the women's long jump,
Abby Venhaus was fourth with a personal best distance of 5.76m.
The Panthers swept the 4x100m race with
Brailyn Johnson,
Ricky Johnson,
Daniel Lacy, and
Cameron Yarbrough crossing the finish line in 40.60 seconds, setting a new season best in the event.
OVC LEADERS: Heading into the third weekend of outdoor season, three Panthers lead their individual events in the Ohio Valley Conference. The following are the top marks in the conference:
Ramsey Hunt: Long Jump - 7.47m (24' 6.25")
Ricky Johnson: 200m - 21.04
Brenda Torres: 1500m - 4:37.34
UPCOMING: The Panthers will take part in the Indiana State Gibson Invite, held in Terre Haute, Ind. Competitions will be Thursday through Saturday, Apr. 18th to 20th.
HEAD COACH: James Gildon was hired as Director of Track & Field at Eastern Illinois in August of 2023. Gildon enters his first year at Eastern after becoming the fifth director of track & field in the school's Division I history. He joins EIU following a successful stint as the associate head coach at Bowling Green.
