ON TAP: The Eastern Illinois men's and women's swim teams close out their regular seasons this weekend. The Panthers return to Evansville on Friday to take on the Purple Aces before the women head to Champaign on Saturday for a dual meet against Illinois.
EVANSVILLE:
- EIU and Evansville last crossed paths in November at the SIU A3 Performance Invite, where the Purple Aces men finished fourth and the women finished fifth.
- The men's team is 2-2 overall with wins over Centre and Southern Indiana, but dropped their last meet at USI.
- The women's team is 0-4 in duals this season.
ILLINOIS:
- The only previous meeting between EIU and Illinois was a Fighting Illini win in 2015.
- Illinois is 5-3 overall with a 3-1 record at ARC Pool.
- They finished fourth at the Hawkeye Invite and 10th at the CSCAA Open Water Nationals.
- The Illini have dropped their last three meets, all against Big 10 competition.
LAST TIME OUT: It was a successful day for the Panthers a Southern Indiana last Saturday, with the men earning an impressive victory and
Corinne Staneart setting a new school record.
Down 32-0 after walking in the door with no dive team, the men won every swim event except the 100 IM to battle their way back for the 164.5-129.5 win.
Eddie Meyers had a big day, taking home three individual golds with victories in the 1,000 free (9:54.74), 50 back (24.88), and 500 free (4:46.88).
On the women's side,
Corinne Staneart stole the show with a school record time of 57.70 in the 100 IM. She also took gold in the 50 fly with a time of 25.55.
Izzy Glasgow and
Autumn Grinter also posted first-place finishes, with Glasgow winning the 50 back (28.11) and Grinter taking the 50 free (24.61).
SWIMMER OF THE WEEK: Corinne Staneart was named Summit League Peak Swimmer of the Week after her record-setting performance at USI. It is the second Swimmer of the Week honor of Staneart's career, and she is the first Eastern swimmer to win the award this season.
TOP CONFERENCE TIMES: Corinne Staneart's school-record 100 IM time (57.70) is also the fastest in the Summit League this season. Meanwhile, her 50 fly time of 25.55 is fourth fastest in the league.
Conner Colston's 53.32 time in the 100 IM is seventh fastest in the conference, while
Andrew Herman's 53.39 mark comes in right behind at eighth.
NEXT UP: The Panthers will have some time off before heading to Iowa City for the Summit League Championships. The event is set to begin on Wednesday, February 19th.
HEAD COACH: Scott Teeters is in his first season as Eastern Illinois head swimming coach. Teeters has nearly 40 years of coaching experience, including 25 at the collegiate level. He has led Division I programs at Eastern Michigan, Oakland, and Gardner Webb. He also served as head coach at Olivet Nazarene University where he guided his teams to three national championships, including back-to-back men's championships in 2016 and 2017, and a women's championship in 2017. Teeters has also served in multiple leadership roles for USA Swimming.
