Venhaus’ Long Jump Gold Medal Highlights Panthers First Day At OVC Championships

Daniel Lacy placed 1st in the 200m preliminary round with a time of 21.22. The 4000m DMR squad of Tylea Borgic, Makenna McBride, Ashlyn Denney, and Brenda Torres earned gold with a time of 12:00.38.

Eastern Illinois completed the first day of the OVC indoor championships in Louisville, Kentucky. The men's team heads into the final day in 4th place with 25 points, while the women's team is in 2nd place with 31 points. On day one, EIU was highlighted by multiple first-place finishes and gold medals. Daniel Lacy placed 1st in the 200m preliminary round with a time of 21.22. Abby Venhaus earned a gold medal in the women's long jump with a 5.78m (18-11.50) mark. The 4000m DMR squad of Rylea Borgic, Makenna McBride, Ashlyn Denney, and Brenda Torres earned gold with a time of 12:00.38. 



Men's Track: 

Maliek Bush placed 1st in the heptathlon men's long jump with a 7.07m (23-2.25) mark. Bush finished 2nd in the heptathlon men's 60m with a time of 7.05. He placed 3rd in the heptathlon men's high jump with a 1.87m (6-1.50m) mark. Bush also finished 5th in the heptathlon men's shot put with a score of 11.31m (37-1.25).  

Machi Nelson and Bush went three and four in the men's long jump. Nelson placed 3rd with a 7.12m (23-4.25) mark, while Bush followed with a 7.12m (23-4.25) mark. 

Sam Bradbury placed 4th in the men's weight throw with a score of 19.39m (63-7.00), which ranks 4th in EIU history. 

Nathan Kirby placed 4th in the 60m hurdles preliminary round with a time of 8.16.  

Ayden Cothern, Shawn Lacy, and Daniel Lacy each placed in the top five of the men's 60m preliminary round. Cothern placed 2nd with a time of 6.777, while Shawn placed 3rd with a time of 6.780. Daniel was close behind, finishing 5th with a time of 6.84 seconds.  

Spencer Wilson qualified for the 800m finals tomorrow with a time of 1:53.63.  

Daniel Lacy won the 200m preliminary round with a time of 21.22, which ranks 5th in program history. Cothern was closely behind, finishing third with a time of 21.41, which is 6th in EIU history. Bush propelled himself into qualifications, earning 8th place by .06 seconds.  



Women's Track: 

Layla Bonilla placed 5th in the women's high jump with a 1.66m (5-5.25) mark.  

Angela Dobbins finished 5th in the women's 60m hurdles preliminary round with a time of 8.86.  

Devin Johnston placed 4th in the women's 400m preliminary round with a time of 57.96.  

Abby Venhaus earned a gold medal in the women's long jump with a 5.78m (18-11.50) mark. Rounding out the top five in the long jump, Dobbins placed 5th with a 5.58m (18-3.75) mark. 

Venhaus also placed 3rd in the 60m with a time of 7.58 seconds, which is tied for 3rd in EIU history. In the same event, Analena Peterson also qualified for the finals tomorrow with a time of 7.66, ranking 7th in the programs record book. 

Ashlyn Denney and Aly Douglass both qualified for the 800m finals. Denney placed 5th in the preliminary round with a time of 2:16.57, while Douglass placed 7th with a time of 2:17.06. 

Peterson and Venhaus will move on to the 200m finals, with Peterson finishing 2nd with a time of 24.11, which is now the fastest time in EIU history. Venhaus placing 6th with a time of 24.58, which is the 7th fastest time in EIU history.  

The 4000m DMR squad of Rylea Borgic, Makenna McBride, Ashlyn Denney, and Brenda Torres earned gold with a time of 12:00.38, which is the 10th fastest in program history.
