PINEVILLE, Ky. -- With three players finishing in the Top 20, the Eastern Illinois men's golf squad opened the fall portion of the 2009-10 schedule with a fourth place finish at the Wasiota Winds Fall Kickoff, hosted by Ohio Valley Conference rival Morehead State.
Senior
Matt Bird led all players with a one-under-par 215 total at the two-day, three-round event. He finished tied for 7th place after firing a four-under 68 in the final round. Sophomore
David Lawrence wasn't far behind, tying for 9th place after finishing even at the Par 72, 6,993-yard course, with a 216 total.
Also in the Top 20 was sophomore
Gino Parrodi, who tied for 20th with a six-over 222, that included two consecutive even par performances.
Rounding out the Panther contingent was sophomores
Sean Dozier and
Kevin Flack who ended up tied for 36th and 44th place, respectively.
John A. Logan CC won the team title with a two-over 866 total. The Panthers 12-over finish of 876 gave EIU fourth place, and the top standing of all OVC schools competing in the event, as Eastern topped host Morehead State (5th/879), Eastern Kentucky (7th/890), UT Martin (9th/893) and future league foe SIU Edwardsville (10th/898).
The Colonels of EKU had the top individual finisher as Zack Butler ended up with 10-under 206. Unfortunately he played as a non-scoring member of the squad, so his high finish didn't help EKU in the team standings.
The Panthers continue fall play at the DePaul Invitational on Sep. 27-28, with a practice round set for Sep. 26 in Lemont, Ill. EIU will look to improve upon their 13th place finish (of 15) at last year's fall invite hosted by the Blue Demons of DePaul.
