PEORIA, Ill. – Down two with just under 10 seconds remaining in the game,
Kelsey Wyss drained the game-winning three pointer to give the Eastern Illinois women's basketball team a 59-58 road win over Bradley on Tuesday night. EIU improves to 2-0 on the year.
The game saw 15 lead changes in addition to having the score tied eight times, including a 29-29 halftime score.
The Panthers (2-0) took their largest lead in the game at the 7:53 mark in the second half when
Mariah King hit a shot to make the score, 52-45. The Braves (1-1) then went on a 13-3 run to go ahead by three (58-55) with 2:21 remaining in the contest before the Panther defense stopped the Braves from scoring another basket.
Junior
Sydney Mitchell scored a team-high 15 points off the bench to pace the Panther offense while classmate
Ta'Kenya Nixon added 14 points. King also scored in double figures, netting 10 points.
Three players in Nixon,
Sabina Oroszova and
Chantelle Pressley all pulled down seven rebounds while King chipped in six rebounds. Nixon also added six steals and five assists in the win.
Both teams had 41 rebounds in the game with EIU holding a 19-16 advantage in offensive rebounds. The Panthers forced 23 Bradley turnovers that converted to 17 points.
EIU connected on 35.7 percent of its shots from the field with Bradley connecting on 39.7 percent of its field goals. The Panthers went 13-for-27 from the charity stripe, led by Nixon who went 5-for-7.
MacKenzie Westcott led Bradley with 11 points and rebounds. Leah Kassing also chipped in 15 points while Katie Yohn added 10.
EIU returns to action on Nov. 21 when they play host to Illinois State at noon. The game will serve as the Panthers annual Kid's Day game.
