CHARLESTON, Ill. – Sophomore
Jordyne Crunk scored a season-high 19 points and senior
Chantelle Pressley posted her fourth career double-double to lead the Panther women's basketball team over Austin Peay, 80-46, on Saturday afternoon. EIU improves to 14-4 overall and 5-0 in Ohio Valley Conference play.
After trailing 26-25 with 6:56 left in the first half, the Panthers went on an 21-2 run to take a 43-28 advantage into the locker room. EIU never looked back in the second half and eventually took its largest lead, 80-38, with just over four minutes remaining in the game.
The EIU defense did its job in the contest, limiting the Lady Govs to only seven points over a span of 11 and a half minutes at one point in the game. The Panther defense also held Austin Peay to a 29 percent field-goal percentage on the day and forced 16 turnovers. The 34-point loss for Austin Peay is its largest defeat in OVC play since 1993.
Pressley scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in the win. Junior
Ta'Kenya Nixon added 12 points, four rebounds and two steals. Three other players scored eight points in
Mariah King,
Sydney Mitchell and
Katlyn Payne.
EIU had 11 players grab a rebound in the game, out rebounding Austin Peay 53-32 on the afternoon. The Panthers tied a season-high with seven blocks, paced by freshman
Sabina Oroszova who had three in only 11 minutes of action.
EIU hit 46.2 percent (30-for-65) of its shots from the floor and went 15-for-19 from the charity stripe. Crunk led the Panthers from the foul line as she went 9-for-10.
Jasmine Rayner led Austin Peay with 13 points while Whitney Hanley added 11. Defensively, Nicole Olszewski and Leslie Martinez both had five rebounds.
The Panthers close its three-game homestand on Monday, Jan. 23 against Tennessee State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Lantz Arena.
