ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Eastern Illinois women's tennis had four individuals in action at the ITA Midwest Regional hosted by the University of Michigan. Freshman Rachel Papavasilopoulous was able to advance to the main singles draw after posting three wins in the qualifying singles draw.
Papavasilopoulous beat Vanesa Pardo of Bowling Green in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) in the opening round. She then beat Rita Pedroso of Akron in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) in the second round. Papavasilopoulous beat Sofia Macias of Youngstown State in the third round of the qualifying singles draw 6-4, 7-6 (6) to advance to the main singles draw. In the opening round of the main singles draw she was beaten by Rachel Chong of Notre Dame (6-1, 6-4).
Emily Pugachevsky nearly joined Papavasilopoulous in the main singles draw as she also advanced to the third round of the qualifying draw. She beat Sidney Reineke of Bowling Green in the opening round (6-3, 6-3). In the second round Pugachevsky beat Andrea Ballinger of Ohio State (6-3, 6-3). In the third round Paula Tormos of Marquette ended Pugachevsky's ITA Regional run beating her 6-1, 7-5.
Stella Cliffe went 1-1 in qualifying singles play. She beat Ksenia Providokhina of Detroit in three sets (0-6, 6-4, 6-3) to open tournament play. Rachel LeComber of UIC beat Cliffe in the second round (6-4, 6-3).
Srista Slaria lost her opening round match to Marharita Tavpash of Bowling Green (6-1, 6-1).
EIU's two doubles teams both lost in the opening round. Slaria and Pugachevsky lost 8-2 to the Michigan State doubles team of Thielman and Chua. Papavasilopoulous and Cliffe lost their doubles match, 8-3, to the Wisconsin doubles team of Castellano and Keberle.
