CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – After losing their season opener on a tie-breaker on Saturday evening, the Eastern Illinois women's tennis team returned to action on Sunday evening falling to Big Ten member Illinois, 7-0.
The Panthers lost the doubles point after falling in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches. Playing at No. 1 doubles
Stella Cliffe and
Grace Summers knocked off Emilee Duong and Jaclyn Switkes, 6-3. The Illinois doubles team entered ranked at No. 45.
In singles action, Illinois won all six points in straight sets. Playing at No. 1 singles freshman
Rachel Papavasilopoulos lost to Asuka Kawai in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Kawai is currently ranked No. 114 in the nation.
Cliffe playing at No. 2 singles,
Karla Contreras playing at No. 4 singles and
Abby Carpenter playing at No. 6 singles all lost their matches by scores of 6-3, 6-1.Â
Srishti Slaria lost 6-2, 6-2 to Grace Tapak playing at No. 5 singles.
EIU is now 0-2 on the season and will play next Saturday at Notre Dame followed by a double header at Ball State next Sunday. Illinois improved to 2-0 on the year.
