CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Eastern Illinois women's tennis swept a doubleheader on Friday playing at the Dodds Tennis Center in Champaign. EIU beat IUPUI in the morning 5-2 followed by a late afternoon 6-1 win over Illinois-Springfield.
EIU improved to 6-8 on the season and plays at DePaul on Sunday.
EIU 5, IUPUI 2
Eastern Illinois opened the morning with a 5-2 win over IUPUI. The Panthers secured the doubles point winning all three matches.
Grace Summers and
Claire Martin played at No. 3 doubles and picked up a 6-0 win.
In singles play EIU won four of the six matches with wins at No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles.
Stella Cliffe (#2),
Srishti Slaria (#3) and
Abby Carpenter (#6) all won their matches in straight sets.
Emily Pugachevsky won the third-set tie breaker over Samantha Mayer to win at No. 4 singles. Pugachevsky won 6-2, 6-7 (8), 1-0 (3).
EIU 6, UIS 1
In the night cap the Panthers won 6-1 over Illinois-Springfield. EIU won two of the three matches in doubles play to win the opening point. Slaria and Summers won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles with Cliffe and Martin winning 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action the Panthers claimed five of the six matches. Cliffe won in straight sets at No. 1 singles needing tie break points in both sets to beat Jane Carter 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1).
Slaria (#3), Pugachevsky (#4),
Karla Contreras (#5) and Martin all won in straight sets in singles play. Martin beat Kate Dumstorff 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot.
