Tennis Prepares For Final Road Weekend Matches

Panthers travel to Murray State and Austin Peay

Eastern Illinois men's and women's tennis plays on the road for the final time this season as the Panthers travel to Murray State and Austin Peay for Ohio Valley Conference action.  EIU will host home matches next weekend, April 13-14, for senior day and then play in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in Nashville, Tenn., the following weekend.
 
EIU WOMEN
The Eastern Illinois women's team will play a pair of weekend OVC matches that could determine seeding in the upcoming conference tournament.  EIU is 10-10 on the season and 4-1 in the OVC.  The Panthers will play at Murray State on Friday at 1 p.m.   Murray State has won seven straight matches and is 11-6 overall, 5-0 in the OVC.   EIU will then travel to play at Austin Peay on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.   APSU is 8-6 overall, 4-1 in the OVC.
 
EIU has won two straight matches and four of its last five after sweeping Belmont and Tennessee State last weekend.   Stella Cliffe was named the OVC Female Tennis Player of the Week after picking up straight set wins at No. 1 singles and partnering with Grace Summers for two wins at No. 1 doubles.   Cliffe is now 6-4 at No. 1 singles this spring and 12-6 overall.   She is 5-0 in OVC play at No. 1 doubles with Summers with the duo posting an 11-6 record this spring.
 
Emily Pugachevsky won both of her matches last weekend at No. 4 singles as she is now 9-1 on the season in that spot in the line-up.  Claire Martin continues to give EIU a strong player at No. 6 singles with a 6-5 record including a 4-1 record in conference play.
 
EIU MEN
The Eastern Illinois men's team will play at Austin Peay on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.   The Panthers are 5-15 overall, 1-4 in the OVC after beating Tennessee State 4-3 last Saturday in Danville.   Austin Peay enters at 1-15 overall, 0-3 in the OVC.  The Governors have lost 11 straight matches this season.
 
EIU was able to secure the win over Tennessee State with a solid play in the middle of its line-up.   Logan Charbonneau won at No. 3 singles giving the freshman his third win of the season at that position in the line-up.   Gage Kingsmith won at No. 4 singles to give him two wins this season at that spot in the line-up and four wins overall.  Freddie O'Brien posted the final EIU singles point against TSU as he is now 9-9 in singles play at the No. 1 spot.
 
Kingsmith would team with Jared Woodson at No. 1 doubles to help EIU win the doubles point. Kingsmith and Woodson have a 5-4 record in doubles play this spring including a 3-1 record in OVC action.
