4/11/2019 3:27:00 PM

Eastern Illinois men's and women's tennis will play their final home matches of the season this weekend.  Due to expected high winds, Friday's matches for both teams against Austin Peay will be moved to the Dodds Tennis Center in Champaign.  The EIU men will play at 10 am followed by the Panther women at around 12:30 p.m.

On Saturday the EIU women will host Murray State at 11 a.m. at Darling Courts for what will be senior day for Srishti Slaria and Abby Carpenter.

The EIU women posted a 2-1 record last weekend including splitting OVC matches at Belmont and Tennessee State.  EIU is now 11-7 overall, 2-2 in the OVC.

Rachel Papavasilopoulos has been a standout for the Panthers at number one singles as she improved to 16-2 on the season.  Papavasilopoulos has won 11 straight matches with all but one of those victories coming in straight sets.

Seniors Slaria and Carpenter have played well this spring.  Slaria has posted a 13-5 record playing at number two singles including winning OVC Female Player of the Week two weeks ago.   Carpenter is 8-9 this spring moving up to play at number three singles after beginning the season in the number four position.

On the men's side EIU posted a 2-1 record last weekend on the road splitting OVC matches at Belmont and Tennessee State.  EIU is 13-13 on the season matching the highest win total for the program since the 2008 season.

Freddie O'Brien was named the OVC Male Tennis Player of the Week following his 3-0 singles performance which included a win over defending OVC Male Player of the Year Hendrik Inno.   O'Brien now has 30 career wins at number one singles which ranks fourth all-time at EIU.  His 15 singles wins this year rank tied for eighth on the EIU single season wins list.

Daniel Hernandez and Logan Charbonneau have also both reached double figure singles wins this spring.  Hernandez is now 12-10 this season with a majority of his play coming at number three and four singles.  Charbonneau is now 11-9 on the season with wins in all three of the final singles slots (4, 5 and 6).

This is the final regular season match for the EIU men's team as they have already qualified for the OVC Tournament on April 25-27.  The EIU women still have remaining road OVC matches at UT Martin and Southeast Missouri on April 19 and 20.
