BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Illinois women's tennis swept this week's Ohio Valley Conference awards as the Panthers collected both the singles and doubles players of the week.
Christine Gouws was named the OVC Player of the Week with the tandem of
Madeline Monroy and
Brittany Steven earning OVC Doubles Team of the Week.
Gouws posted a 3-0 record playing a No. 1 singles for the Panthers as they had a busy week going 2-1 as a team. Gouws opened play on Saturday with a pair of two set wins over Olivet Nazarene and St. Francis (Ill.) as EIU hosted a pair of home matches at the Danville Tennis Center winning 7-0 in both contests. Gouws won 6-2, 6-2 against ONU's top player before a 6-1, 7-5 win over the top player for USF. On Sunday, Gouws extended her win streak to three straight with a three set win at Milwaukee during a 5-2 team loss. Gouws dropped the opening set in a tie-break 6-7 (3-7) before storming back to win 6-3, 10-7 for the victory.
For Monroy and Steven, the pair posted a 3-0 record in doubles action for the weekend as Eastern Illinois had a busy weekend finishing at 2-1 as a team. As part of Saturday's 7-0 sweeps over Olivet Nazarene and St. Francis (Ill.), Monroy and Steven helped clinch the matches with wins at No. 2 doubles. They won 6-1 over ONU and 6-3 over St. Francis. On Sunday at Milwaukee they squared the doubles contest with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles before Milwaukee was able to secure the point with a final win at No. 1 doubles clinching the overall point.
EIU is 3-4 on the season with a midweek match today (Feb. 15) at Saint Louis before a weekend match at Bradley.
