INDIANAPOLIS -- The Eastern Illinois men and women swimming squads capturing third and fifth places, respectively, following final day action at the end-of-season Summit League Championships, on Saturday. The meet was hosted by IUPUI at the UI Natatorium in Indianapolis.

The EIU men ended up with 571 total points, just six shy of taking second place. The women, meanwhile, leaped past arch-rival Western Illinois in the closing events, taking fifth.

“We fought extremely hard and I could not be prouder of our team,” said second year head coach Matt Bos. “The women came back on the last night to catch Western, which obviously was a great way to end the season.“

Panther newcomer Ken Tiltges picked up the 'Newcomer of the Meet' on the guys side, following an outstanding weekend, including winning the 100-Meter Free sprint on Saturday with a time of 46.03, less than two seconds off the EIU record, but placing him third all-time none-the-less.

“It was great for Ken (Tiltges) to be named 'Newcomer' of the year,” said Bos. “He had a great meet and really worked hard all year, so he definitely deserved it. Along with John Wilson they were the only two freshman to win an event.”

Wilson won the 50-Free on the first day of the meet, giving both prestigious sprint titles to the Panthers this year. Wilson, meanwhile, also finished just behind Tiltges in the 100-Free race, touching second.

Final day events at the meet included the 1650-Free, 200-Back, 100-Free, 200-Breast, 200-Fly, and 400-Free Relay.

More school marks continued to be rewritten as senior Lauren Zillmer set a school mark in her 100-Free prelim of 52.71, topping the previous 12-year old finish of 52.77. Junior Megan Eshleman ended up tying the Eastern record with her 1650-Free time of 17:35.50.

Senior Laura Nilsen made the most of her final time in the water as a Panther, topping her own school-record mark in the 200-Back, improving on her previous best time of 2:06.93 by touching at 2:05.04 in her prelim race.

For the guys, Nathan Moritz recorded a new school mark in the 200-Fly, topping a nearly 30-year-old finish with a prelim time of 1:53.80. Lastly, Rich Waszak broke a seven-year old school record time in the 200-Back, with his new best finish of 1:51.09, also in his preliminary race.

The guy's foursome of underclassmen Wilson, sophomore Tyler Hsieh, and fellow freshmen Colin McGill and Tiltges, finished third in their 400-Free Relay, coming just short of setting yet another school record for the Panthers.

“We disqualified our men's 400-Medley Relay on the first night, which forced us have to battle back the rest of the meet,” Bos said. “Plus we also lost two guys to the flu on the last day, yet we still nearly caught Centenary for second. Hats off to the Centenary squad who won the 400-Free Relay which secured second place for them.”

Oakland won both sides of the meet, pulling away by nearly 300 points for the men and over 400 on the women's side.

The Panther men and women finished the 2009-10 season with respective dual records of 6-2 and 5-3 and repeated their third and fifth place spots in the Summit League that they earned last season.
