CHARLESTON, Ill. -- The Eastern Illinois men's and women's tennis squads lost their respective matches at home to Jacksonville State, as the Gamecocks hit past the Panthers in Ohio Valley Conference action, 6-1 on the men's side and 7-0 for the women.
The losses drop the Panther men and women to 3-13 (0-4 OVC) and 4-10 (1-4 OVC), respectively.
Senior Jeff Rutherford edged his Jacksonville State at the top of the lineup (6-1, 0-6, 6-1). After being blanked in the second set, Rutherford dominated the third set to score the only EIU point.
The men dropped the doubles point but the Rutherford/Justin Haag duo squeaked out a 9-8 win.
Warren Race and Matyas Hilgert were able to push their opponents to three sets but couldn't come up with wins.
The women were blanked losing 7-0, but got a couple of solid efforts in singles play. No. 5 singles player Annie Egan pushed her opponent deep in to a tiebreaker up to ten where the winner had to win by two, but eventually lost a heartbreaker 15-13. After winning the second set, No. 4 singles player Shannon Brooks forced the same tiebreaker format as Egan but fell 12-10.
Jacksonville State won the doubles point by taking all three doubles matchups.
The Panthers will play host to Tennessee State at 9 am this coming Sunday. The match was originally scheduled for Saturday (April 3), but has been moved due to possible inclement weather tomorrow.
