ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- Eastern Illinois women's rugby fell to 0-2 on the early season following a 24-13 Tuesday (Sep. 16) evening road loss at Lindenwood.
Panthers actually enjoyed an early 8-0 lead as freshman Madison Overbey scampered for a try less than ten minutes into the contest. Â However the two-point conversion by junior Hannah Vieth would fall short, yet she was able to counter with a quick three-point penalty kick just ten minutes later to extend the EIU advantage.
The host Lions would counter with their own try and conversion to get on the scoreboard and pull to within 8-7 of the Panthers at the half.
Following the break, Lindenwood would score 17 consecutive points in the second half, quickly putting the pressure on the Panthers. Â EIU did add a try by newcomer Lacey Viano for the final Eastern points.
Defensively, sophomore Breanna Young paced EIU with 13 solo stops and added three assisted tackles as well. Â Newcomer Lynn Webb finished with six solo tackles and led with five assisted stops as well.
Despite the defeat, EIU still holds a 2-1 all-time series advantage over Lindenwood (2-1).
Eastern will have a week off to prepare for their home opener versus Tennessee at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 27, as this coming weekend's road game at Southern Illinois has been canceled.
