O'FALLON, Ill. - The Eastern Illinois men's tennis team fell at Saint Louis 6-1 to open their 2017 spring season. 

Three Panthers pushed their respective opponents to a third set as freshman Marko Stefan Janjusic recorded EIU's only singles victory of the match. Janjusic defeated SLU's Justin Nogalski 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 6 spot to record his first career victory at EIU.

"We competed pretty well in spots and really put a good effort forward," said head coach Sam Kercheval. "But being that it was the first match, we saw a lot of things that were exploited."

The Billikens opened Friday's match winning the all-important doubles point two matches to one. The freshmen duo of Freddie O'Brien and Gage Kingsmith were victorious in their doubles debut downing the Billiken duo of Charlie Parry and John Nogalski by a score of 6-4.

Kingsmith had a good showing in singles play as well pushing his opponent Oscar Pachon to the limit from the No. 4 position eventually falling in three sets 7-5, 6-7, 13-11. 

Jared Woodson also went to three sets Friday night against SLU's John Nogalski falling 5-7, 6-1, 10-7 in the No. 3 spot.

The Panthers have a quick turnaround as they head to Ball State Sunday to take on the Cardinals at 1 p.m.
