Tennis Closes Out Season With Doubleheader Sweep

The EIu men's tennis team closed out their 2017 season with wins over Hanover and UIS Saturday.

CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Eastern Illinois men's tennis team capped off their 2017 season with wins over Hanover and Illinois-Springfield Saturday. Following the pair of wins the Panthers closed out their season 5-19 overall.

EIU's lone senior Jacob Wendell finished his Panther career with two doubles wins alongside partner Jared Woodson. The duo was able to clinch the doubles point for EIU against Illinois-Springfield in the Panthers second match of the day winning 7-6 (3).

Freshman Freddie O'Brien made his return to the court Saturday picking up two wins in doubles play with partner Grant Reiman.

The Panthers opened the day with a clean sweep of Hanover winning every singles and doubles match. Each Panther recorded straight set victories except for Gage Kingsmith who was pushed to a third set by Landon Carrico in the No. 1 spot. Kingsmith went on to win the match 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (5) to record his lone singles win of the day.

Trent Reiman won both of his singles matches picking up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over his Hanover opponent before rallying for a three set victory against Christian Timm of UIS 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Grant Reiman nearly matched his brother on the day after winning his first match of the day 6-0, 6-1, but fell in the No. 3 spot against UIS's Logan Burgess-Hayes 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Freshman Marko Stefan Janjusic finished his first season at EIU with an 11-13 overall record after winning both of his singles matches. Janjusic opened the day with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Hanover's Brent Barrett. The Malmo, Sweden native then clinched the 4-3 victory for EIU over UIS pushing Sam Clarke to the limit winning in three sets 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.

With their two wins today EIU has now recorded their most wins since the 2014 season.
